Rediscover the beauty of Japan in a snow-covered landscape.

Gero Hot Springs, Takayama, and Shirakawa-go are the best-known tourist areas in Gifu Prefecture, attracting large numbers of visitors from throughout Japan and around the world, but their popularity is closely rivaled by that of Hida Furukawa. Located in the northern part of the Hida Highlands, this town, with its ancient streetscape, serves as a base for the Satoyama Experience, which provides guided snowshoe tours in the winter under the banner of Village Snowshoeing. The jumping-off point for the tour is the small mountain village of Tanekura, about 30 minutes north of Hida Furukawa by car, which is home to around twenty residents. This beautiful village is graced with traditional homes and wooden storehouses known as “itakura.” From December to February, when the snowfall is particularly heavy, the locals don snowshoes, known in the old days as “kanjiki,” to walk on top of the snow. Guides will explain the landscape of the village, with its many “tanada” terraced rice fields, as well as the local lifestyle, in which people coexist in harmony with nature. The day after a snowstorm, the visitor can find, here and there in the soft, untrodden snow, the footprints of animals that live in the vicinity, giving one a palpable sense of the abundant wildlife so close at hand. Come the winter, spend a little special time in this village enveloped in snow and silence.

Cycling is another popular Satoyama activity.

A trip to the satoyama of Hida Furukawa does not have to be made in winter, and the warmer seasons are also recommended. How about a slow-paced bicycle ride through verdant foothills and rural hamlets under unobstructed blue skies? Our tours take you through the ancient streetscape of Furukawa, with its rows of white-walled storehouses, and out into the satoyama area, where the farm fields and rural scenery spread out before you. You’ll visit shops selling locally produced vegetables straight from the farm and huge traditional homes that conjure up the lives of large families and give you a glimpse of daily life in the Hida region. The standard course, our most popular, takes 3.5 hours to cover its 22-kilometer route. It lets you experience the daily routines of Hida life and shows you things you’d never notice without the help of a guide who lives in the area. A 2.5-hour half course is also popular with visitors who are traveling with children. Consider working it into your travel schedule. The cycling tours are conducted from late March until late December, giving you a chance to see how the life of the Hida region changes throughout the year.
