Enjoy all four seasons in the highlands, from nature walks to a footbath.

The Shinhotaka Ropeway runs up the Sengoku Ridge of Mount Hotaka, one of the northern Japan Alps. There are two ropeways connecting Shin-Hotaka Onsen Station at 1,117 meters and Nishihotakaguchi Station at 2,156 meters. Enjoy the grand scenery from above, along with the walking paths, and the footbath at the station.
The first ropeway climbs to Nabedairakogen Station, with an elevation of 1,305 meters. In the Nabedaira highlands you will find the Kami-Takara-no-Yu hot spring with running outdoor bath, nature walks, and more. Relax in the spa, or hike the trails to get closer to nature. The Sangakukan Shinhotaka Visitor Center offers a wealth of information on the area, and hosts guided walks and winter snowshoe tours. Why not drop by and see?
The northern Japan Alps are a treasure house of alpine plants throughout the year. Alpine plant gardens are open at Nabedairakogen and Shirakabadaira Stations, where you can see the plants of the season such as Sargent's cherry, flaccid anemone, and Lilium japonicum.

Japan’s only double-decker cable car!

The Shinhotaka Ropeway is unique for the special two-story gondolas used on the second ropeway, from Shirakabadaira Station to Nishihotakaguchi at the top of the mountain. Take the only double-decker cable car in Japan for a look at all the grandeur of the northern Japan Alps from an elevation of over 2,000 meters, above the clouds.
From the fresh green leaves of spring to the pristine white of winter, you’ll find beautiful scenery here year-round. As you climb ever-higher, your excitement and wonder will grow with the breathtaking scenery. The difference in elevation is especially apparent in the fall, when you can enjoy the autumn colors for about one month from late September.
A glorious, 360-degree panorama awaits you at the top. The stunning view of the northern Alps, including Mount Nishi-Hotakadake, Mount Yarigatake, and Mount Kasagatake, was awarded two stars in Michelin Green Guide Japan.
